Drawing a pet Pomeranian in coloured pencil

Let me show you how I approached drawing Vivian, a pet Pomeranian’s portrait in coloured pencil.

This was a commissioned portrait, and my first Pomeranian and indeed the first time I have drawn a dog with such long hair. I share more about this commission in my sketchbook post Vivian – Commissioned coloured pencil pet portrait

Coloured pencil for a fine art portrait

Coloured pencil is very popular amongst those who draw, but not well known as a fine art medium by the general public. It can be associated with childhood as we remember colouring in, whereas painting is more often brought to mind for professional artists. However I have been working in coloured pencil for many years now, and love it for its vibrancy, versatility and precision.

I always use professional grade materials for my portraiture, and I favour Polychromos coloured pencils by Faber Castell. I draw on a 100% cotton fine art paper called Stonehenge, made by Legion paper. You can see the textures that can be created and the details that are available in these close up images of Vivian’s portrait.

Drawing a portrait from photographs

There were particular challenges with Vivian’s portrait, as the reference images available to me were not ideal. The photos were lovely snapshots showing her personality, but were not taken close enough to the dog to capture any real detail. I will always work the best I can with the images that I am sent, as I appreciate that for numerous reasons a perfect photo simply may not be available. At times like this collaborating with the client is crucial. They have an image in their mind of what they would like me to create, and together we can help make that a reality.

Vivian’s portrait – stages one to three

I feel that with this portrait I was being rather tentative for a long time. Coloured pencil is not easy to erase once on the page, so I am mindful of not drawing too much too soon. I work by blocking in the rough shapes initially in light tones. Once these are in place I gradually layer more pencil as I become sure of the placement of shadows and highlights.

In these early layers I was also working out which colours to blend. I rarely do much in the way of preparatory colour work, as I prefer to explore on the portrait itself.

Vivian comes to life in stages four to six

By stage four I am more confident in my rendering of her features, so I begin building the darker shades. This is always a turning poing in any artwork, as the dark values bring depth and the opportunity for increased contrast.

You may notice on stage five that the warmer colours look paler now. I have not lightened them, rather this is the result of more darks across the portrait affecting how we see the colours on the page. It is something that as an artist I am always very mindful of. The more you draw, the more each colour and tone alters our perception of the rest. This is in part why I never feel that one area is completed till I am almost wholly finished, as everything relies on everything else for context.

Trusting the process

It took me some time to get into my stride when drawing Vivian. This is not to say I did not enjoy it, quite the opposite. She was a delight of a subject to draw. Just that the textures and details were challlenging, and I was doubting myself for quite some time. However I have been drawing for long enough to know that not every portrait gives up it’s secrets easily. I trust the process and my experience as an artist. Sooner or later it always comes good.

More pet dog portraits shown step by step

If you enjoyed this post, you might like to see the development of two other dog portraits. We have Ivy who is a Pug, so short haired, and Dexter, a Parsons Jack Russell, with a rougher mid-length coat.

Here is my sketchbook blog post about drawing Ivy’s portrait in pastel, and the stages of Dexter’s pastel pet portrait can be seen here.

All you need to know about commissioning a portrait from me

Vivian – commissioned coloured pencil pet portrait

Vivian is my latest coloured pencil drawing, a commissioned portrait of a beautifully fluffy Pomeranian.

A portrait as a present

I was commissioned to draw Vivian by fellow artist and namesake John Dearing. John works as a printmaker, creating stunning works inspired by the natural world. He wanted to gift a friend a portrait of her beloved Pomeranian, and felt that my style better suited what he had in mind. So we chatted about what he was looking for, and this beautiful commission was born.

The challenge of drawing from photographs

There was one main photograph which Vivian’s portrait was to be based on. And as Vivian lives in the North East of England, and I in Cornwall down in the South West, meeting her and taking my own photos was not an option. It was a sweet image of Vivian posing with a handbag, her head cocked to one side, a photograph that her owner particularly loved.

The drawback was that this was a snapshot, pretty low resolution, and of a small dog in a garden. So when I cropped the image to focus on Vivian’s head and zoomed in a little, any clarity was lost and I could not see any more detail. She was a furry ball of colour, but a fuzzy one, and I had to create a realistic portrait with not enough information to go on.

With a few other photos of Vivian from different angles I was able to build a picture of her features and create something lifelike. I was grateful to be able to send regular scanned images of the drawing as it progressed to John. All his feedback ensured I was on the right track.

It wasn’t till I was three quarters of the way through this drawing that I felt confident in my work. I have never drawn such a fluffy, hairy animal before, but this is where the learning comes. I always say that commissions stretch my skills in directions I may not otherwise go. For this I am grateful – the opportunity to develop my artistry with each new portrait.

Portraits drawn with Polychromos pencils

Most recently I drew Poised in coloured pencil, a magnificent horse which really showcases the medium and the potential for colours that pop off the page.

An earlier work is Cub Scout, which is a brilliant example of how I create textures in pencil. In this artwork there is the fur of the lion cub, the soft focus background, and the gnarly tree bark complete with lichen and fungus.

And for a different range of textures and vibrant colours, we have An Age of Indigo, also drawn with Polychromos coloured pencils. This portrait is a masterclass in drawing wrinkles and aged skin, and is a joy for all of the colours as well as the subject’s most beautiful smiling expression.

Commission a coloured pencil portrait.

Commissioning a portrait is an exciting way to capture a moment, the image of a loved one, and preserve an experience for generations to come.

These examples of coloured pencil commissions I have drawn will inspire you and show the different directions you could choose to go in. We have Wakhan Girl, a powerful portrait of a young Afghan girl wearing traditional dress. This portrait was drawn for a client who had met her when on an expedition in remote Afghanistan. It captures probably the last generation where Western influences are not evident in her attire.

Murad is a portrait that I was commissioned to draw using white coloured pencil on black paper. This is a memorial portait of a beloved father. Incredibly, Murad’s portrait will be etched onto his black marble gravestone in Turkmenistan. A standing testament to this man and the life he lived, which you can read more about in this blog post.

And for those for who are feline fans, we have Cat a portrait of a majestic, long haired calico cat. In order to capture Cat’s white fur this portrait was drawn on a cream paper. It offers a contrast to her colouring, making her centre stage on the page.

Commissioning a pet portrait

Commissions are always welcomed from UK based and international clients. On my Commissions page there is an overview of the process, and for a more in depth guide to commissioning a fine art portrait, please read this guide.

Demelza and Bertie – charcoal portrait sketches for charity

These are the latest stars of my pet dog charcoal portraits, sketched to fund raise for charity. Let me introduce you to the wonderful duo that are Demelza and Bertie. I first met these beautiful dogs when walking Bruno at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, here in Cornwall. They caught my eye as they make such a handsome pair, and I got chatting with their owners. Before we knew it new friendships between our respective dogs and us humans were made.

Demelza and Bertie

Demelza is very pretty, and has a quiet grace about her. She is a Labrador x Pointer, and is confident, curious, and highly food motivated. I discovered this when we were all enjoying a catch up over a cuppa and I found Demelza with her head buried deep in my rucksack looking for more treats.

Bertie is a little more reserved, but every bit as sweet. He prefers to take his time watching and considering before coming forward to for lots of cudddles and attention. Bertie is a Jack Russell x Pug, who looks very terrier from the front, and very pug from the shoulders back. An adorable combination.

Portraits to help pets

I love dogs so much, and get great pleasure from combining my two passions – portraiture and animals to support a local rescue. Help 4 Hounds brought the wonderful Bruno into my life, and since then I have been raising funds to support their work and to help more dogs get the loving homes that they deserve. You can read about this project here, and see more of my charcoal dog sketches too.

Do you have a handsome hound or pretty pooch that you would love a portrait of? Or perhaps you are looking for that perfect present for a loved on this Christmas, and you know that their dog is everything to them? If so, and you have a good photograph (it must be in focus and with enough detail for me to be able to zoom in and see the dog close up) then commission an original charcoal sketch and help raise vital funds to help find loving homes for even more dogs in need.

These original artworks are A5 size (15 x 21cm) and are £45 inc P&P within the UK.

£20 from the sale of each portrait will go to Help 4 Hounds, so you know that you will be making a real difference to these dogs lives, supporting their veterinary care, and helping them find homes where they can live happily ever after.

Help 4 Hounds have a Facebook page where you can find information about all the dogs who are currently looking for fostering or adoption, though if you prefer you can email them on [email protected] or call 07516 279583

Drawing Kate and Peeper Dog in pencil

Let me show you how I developed this drawing of Kate and Peeper dog in pencil.

Pencil for a portrait

Pencil (graphite pencil as opposed to coloured pencil) is such a commonplace tool that it is often overlooked. It was what I learned to draw in. Not because I had a particular affinity with it, rather because there was always a pencil laying around somewhere, and I could erase my mistakes and rework the drawing.

Now pencil is my favourite of all the art mediums. The simplicity appeals to me, as does using something so every day to create extraordinary artworks.

Drawing a portrait from photographs

I had not had the pleasure of meeting Peeper dog, although I am sure I would have loved him. The inspiration for ths portrait came from a photograph that Kate shared, and when I saw it it stopped me in my tracks. That is essentially what I look for in an image to draw, It is something unquantifiable, but you know it when you see it.

Although you might get a willing model to sit for you whist you draw from life, dogs are not known for posing and staying still. So photographs are a wonderful tool. Photos give us access to the past, and those whom we may otherwise never know.

Stages one to three

Stages one to three are where I have blocked in the main shapes. The temptation is always to go for the details, the things that make the subject come to life on the page. However as is the case when building anything, the foundations may be less glamorous but they are crucial to your success.

You can see that I focus on the shadows, leaving the page bare where there are the brightest highlights.

Drawing blonde hair is the hardest of the colours in my opinion. You have to really focus on the shadows between the strands, and be careful to not overdo those. In all drawing there is a balance to be struck between suggesting information and leaving space for the mind to fill in the gaps.

Stages four to six

Stages four to six are where it gets really exciting for me. I continue to refine the image as I go, no one area is finished till right at the end. The longer you look at a picture, the more you will see. And the more I draw, the more these elements change how other areas feel. This is especially true with tonal values, as a very dark shadow in one part will make the other darks look paler in comparison.

I would say that Kate doesn’t really look like herself till stage five. Her eye make up is characteristic of her, so without that it feels like something is missing. And at this point I have edited the shape of her eye a tiny amount. This has made a big difference to the likeness.

And of course, as the depth in the shading and the smaller details increase, the drawing changes from something sketchier to a more polished and increasingly beautiful study. It has been such a joy drawing these two, thank you Kate and Peeper for sharing yourselves with me in this way.

I have written more about both Kate and Peeper, and their beautiful relationship in my blog post Kate and Peeper – Pencil Portrait of One Woman and Her Dog.

Videos of drawing Kate and Peeper

I have been learning the basics of recording my drawing process You can see some short videos of the creation of this portrait on my Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

In due course, when I am more proficient at filming and editing my creative process, I will create a YouTube channel. There you cwill be able to learn a lot more about how I draw my portraits.

I will share updates about the development of my YouTube channel in my newsletter (sign up at the bottom of this page) and via social media. And of course a blog post will be shared here in my artist’s sketchbook.

Bruno and Corey – coloured pencil sketch

This coloured pencil sketch of Corey and Bruno is a study of the power of friendship.

Bruno is an ambassador for big dogs

These two boys are very dear to me. I first met Corey thanks to Bruno, who spotted him walking home from school one day. Bruno loves meeting people and was so very excited to see Corey approaching. He was staring at Corey as he came up the road, his tail wagging wildly with anticipation. But little did we know, Corey was terrified of dogs. I explained to Corey and his mum that Bruno had seen him and really, really wanted to be his friend, so we just stood and chatted, keeping a respectful distance.

Over many weeks, Bruno showed time and again that he is a gentle giant, and Corey learned to trust him. He went from standing nearby, to touching Bruno, then stroking him more confidently. I would show Corey that Bruno knew some commands like ‘sit’, ‘paw’, ‘down’ and ‘wait’, and Corey gradually worked up to feeding Bruno treats.

Now they are best buddies who play, walk and do tricks together, and Corey has been able to visit the house of a school friend who has a dog, without fear. Bruno has changed Corey’s life, and they couldn’t be sweeter together.

Art inspired by life

I drew this portrait as a Christmas gift for Corey, to celebrate their friendship. The sketch was inspired by a photograph I took of them both together one evening, Bruno and I were out for a street walk and he led me to Corey’s house, 10 minutes away. So Corey came out to see Bruno before going to bed, making both boy and dog very happy indeed. The drawing of these best buddies now hangs on Corey’s bedroom wall, and we each have new friends for life thanks to the immense love that Bruno approaches every day with.

Bruno – changing lives for the better

You can read more about the wonderful dog that is Bruno, and how he also inspired a canine fundraiser and a whole new way of drawing for me.
