Arnie and Barney are a pair of handsome Dobermanns whose portraits I was commissioned to paint in pastel.
For the love of Dobermanns
The client and his family have always had Dobermann dogs, and he has dedicated his life to caring for rescues. Not only the dogs he has adopted, but also others who are awaiting their forever homes. Barney now, and Arnie before him, accompany their human to collect donated food and visit their local rescues to deliver supplies.
Arnie in particular had a very hard start in life. You can see the scars from when he was used as a bait dog. An inconceivable scenario for so many of us, though Arnie was eventually one of the lucky ones as he found the most loving family. He lived out his days knowing he was safe, and showed how comfortable he was by regularly getting into all sorts of mischief and generally enjoying all he did.
Barney was then adopted more recently and is continuing Arnie’s legacy, creating havoc at every opportunity with his playful antics!
Our dogs are our family
As a dog lover myself, I appreciate just how deep the bond is between a person and their pets. Although they are never by our sides for long enough, portraiture is one way to keep their memories alive and to have a precious reminder of them in our homes.
