As both a professional portrait artist and experienced art tutor, I can help you learn how to draw. I offer a range of art tuition opportunities here in Cornwall, so you too can confidently create beautiful portraits in pencil or pastel.
I am a self-taught artist, which means I am uniquely positioned to demystify drawing for you too. Rather than having been a prodigious child, all of my art is the result of years of practice, exploration and discovery.
In my teaching I share the techniques that are the foundations of shading and observation – the cornerstones of creating realistic art.
My approach is informal, encouraging and nothing like art lessons in school as most of us experienced them. The emphasis is on having fun, understanding the materials and how to get the most from them. All whilst developing your own creative style.

Everyone can draw, and I can show you how
I started teaching art with a portraiture workshop back in 2012. Since then I have taught hundreds of people to draw in pencil, coloured pencil and pastel. I have never met anyone who cannot draw, only those who have not yet learned.
My students range from those who have not been taught the fundamentals, through to artists who enjoy sketching and are keen to improve and refine their skills. Whatever your experience level, I can offer tuition to suit you.
You do not need any prior experience to study with me, as I specialise in teaching absolute beginners. With my tried and tested techniques I guarantee you will be able to create art that you are proud of.
And for those who wish to take their art to the next level, I offer private tuition tailored to your individual needs.
These are weekly sessions held at Lanjeth Nursery and Water Gardens near St Austell. Sketching Nature art classes run on Mondays and Tuesdays, and focus on a different skill or technique each week.
These sessions are designed to improve our sketching skills and are inspired by nature. Booking is essential as places are limited.
Draw Together is aimed at people who benefit from designated time to draw, use pastels, paint, whatever they enjoy, and who would like some guidance from myself in the process.
Together we enjoy the social and creative benefits of being inspired by and supporting one another whilst we work on our own art projects.
You can attend as often or infrequently as you like, though as places are limited booking is essential.
My one-day Learn to Draw and Painting in Pastel workshops offer beginners and improvers an excellent grounding in drawing portraiture. These workshops are an opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of drawing within a small and friendly group.
You will learn a lot in a relaxed and fun setting. From drawing materials and how to get the most from them, to understanding a range of shading and blending techniques. We explore observation and troubleshooting, and apply everything to drawing a portrait in pencil or pastel.
