My pastel portraits A Handful of Chillies and A Handful of Faith have been selected to be a part of the South West Academy exhibition this October. This news is wonderful. I appreciate every opportunity to show my work, and am very grateful that the panel chose to include my art.

The South West Academy open exhibition will run from Tuesday 29th October to Saturday 9th November 2024. You can visit the exhibition daily from 10:30am – 4:30pm.

A handful of pastel studies
These two artworks, A Handful of Chillies and A Handful of Faith are part of a wider series of six hands studies that I have painted in pastel. The four other pieces which make up the collection are A Handful of Love, A Handful of Lotus Seeds, A Handful of Salt and A Handful of Coffee.
For all of these, I am very grateful to Réhahn Photography for his generous permission to reference his remarkable photography for my art.
Hand-drawn art
I have a fascination with hands and the stories that they tell. Especially as we age, they track a lifetime of experiences. And our hands are one of the primary tools we have for interacting with and experiencing the world. They are every bit as interesting as portraits of faces to me, so I am delighted that I can share these studies with a wider audience.
These artworks are both drawn with soft pastel on Pastelmat paper. Pastel is not often associated with finely detailed work. But with the right tools, and a technique that I have developed over the years, I find it every bit as delicate a medium as pencil. Here I take you through the making of A Handful of Chillies and the making of A Handful of Faith.
